“Displacement” captures the traces of former WWII displaced person camps, combining past and present in a series of laser cut images on photographic paper. I am laser cutting plea letters the refugees were sending to the United States and Canada, into my photographic documentation of the former Displaced Person camps. My family’s displacement, which I am restoring in this body of work, is part of a long history of uprooted peoples for whom the idea of “home” is contingent, in flux, without permanent definition and undermined by political agendas beyond their control.

Schedule for the opening day on Saturday, May 11th.

**3:00 pm** Remarks by artist Krista Svalbonas

**4:30 pm** Reflection on the exhibit by Māra Lazda. "Reclaiming our Pasts: Power of Individual Voices in Baltic States"

Mara Lazda (Associate Professor of History, Bronx Community College, City University of New York) will reflect on the importance of oral histories in writing narratives and in shaping democracies in the Baltic States.

**5:00 pm** Movie screening “Vārpa - apsolītā zeme” / "Vārpa - The Promised Land" -in Latvian with English subtitles.

In the early 1920s, soon after the Latvian republic was established, about 2000 Baptists immigrated to Brazil to await the end of the world. It did not come, and Latvians created an island of Christianity in the middle of a rainforest. The Latvian language is still spoken in the Vārpa settlement, but the younger generations have left the area.

**6:00 pm** Discussion and Whiskey Tasting for a donation

POWERS Irish Whiskey tasting with Laris Kreslins. Enjoy a delicious tour of the three expressions of whiskey from the Emerald Isle. Established in 1791, POWERS is distilled to perfection and is a cornerstone of Ireland’s whiskey history.
